Day 1: The first day of the match was washed off due to rain, thereby only 11 overs were bowled.
Lankan bowlers used the favourable conditions better and had put India on backfoot at the end of day 1 by giving three early blows at the score of just 21, Suranga Lakmal took all the three wickets.

Day 2: The second day of the match also delayed due to rain and started after the scheduled time.
Only 22 overs were bowled in a whole day and India at the end of the day was at 74 for 5.
Day 3: Unlike first two days those were washed off due to rain, the third day of the match had started on time.Pujara and Saha tried to put innings back on track.
Cheteshwar Pujara played a good knock at one end as the wickets are continuously fallen on the other end he completed his fifty and helped India to reach a total of 172.

Sri Lanka National Cricket Team first innings:
Sri Lanka did not start well as Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave an early breakthrough of Karunaratne sending him back with a score of just 8. Samarawickarama gave a flying start to Lankan team and scored 23 of 22 balls before got out of Bhuvneshwar.
Angelo Mathews and Thirimane both scored watchful fifties and put Sri Lanka to take first innings lead.At the end of day 3, the score was 165 for 4.
Day 4: Chandimal and Dickvella started well before Dickwella got out with a score of 35 runs.
Rangana Herath played a good inning in the lower order of 67 runs helped Sri Lanka to take a lead of 122 runs.

Shikhar Dhawan and Lokesh Rahul started well and gave India dominating start as both scored quick fifties and put Sri Lanka on backfoot.
Day 5: India did not start well on the fifth day as Lankan bowlers gave an early blow in the form of Rahul, pujara and Rahane put India on the backfoot in match saving mode from the attacking mentality.
In between the wickets were fallen continuously at the other end captain Virat Kohli played a mature innings scoring his 50th international centuary helped india to take a decent lead of 230 and gave Sri lanka a target of 231 runs.
